Benefits of Aquatic Therapy

Our clinic is located inside the Island Athletic Club, where we are able to utilize the beautiful 25 yard indoor pool. The pool is kept at a comfortable 84 degrees, ideal for use in aquatic based exercise programs for patients who must limit weight bearing or are unable to tolerate land based exercises due to balance problems. Patients are also able to use the hot tub, sauna, steam room and showers for their benefit.

First you will meet with your main therapist; Andy Goetz, PT. Then you will work with Katie Donohoe, PTA our Physical Therapist Assistant, in the pool. She has received multiple certifications in Aquatic Therapy and has been working with patients in the pool for over 17 years. In addition to Aquatic Therapy, Katie also works with patients on land under the direction of Andy.

Hippocrates was one of the first to discover the therapy of water centuries ago. Today those benefits are still helping improve functions on many levels.

The following are just some of the many benefits that aquatic therapy can improve or maintain:

  • Coordination, balance and gait
  • Muscle strength, power and endurance
  • Postural stabilization
  • Aerobic capacity
  • Muscle relaxation and increased circulation
